The item is on the agenda. The gallery is full of red shirts. Three councilmembers are throwing motions at you from the dais, and the votes start landing in three minutes.
West Hollywood City Council: Brick Break is a free browser game from Occupied West Hollywood. You stand at the back of the chambers with a rolled-up agenda packet. Byers, Hang and Erickson throw council motions. Bat them back. Three hits gavel a councilmember off the dais. Clear all three before the item passes.
On a computer: click the game to start, then move the agenda packet with the arrow keys or the mouse. P recesses the meeting, M turns the sound off, F goes full screen. On a phone: tap Play full screen and turn your phone sideways; drag left and right to move the packet. Play full screen.
How the meeting runs
- You get three minutes. One YES vote lands every minute. Three votes and the item passes.
- Every motion that gets past you costs 10 seconds.
- Meister and Heilman drop +20 SEC bonuses. Catch them.
- The City Attorney raises an FPPC BLOCK to shield a councilmember. Nothing gets through it.
There are four items on the agenda, one for each year Erickson has served on the council:
- Cancel the Flock Contract
- Fast Track the Fountain Ave Bike Lane Project
- Defund the LA County Sheriff
- Ban on Single-Family Homes
Satire. The agenda items, motions and vote tallies in the game are invented, and the gallery figures are generic. The Erickson voice clips are verbatim excerpts from public West Hollywood City Council meeting broadcasts.
it was kind of hard to play. I really didn’t understand all those things coming down, but it was really fun to hear once again the obnoxious things that Erickson was saying!
I’m gonna try again and see if I can figure it out more easily the second time.
